Proffit estimated that he sees more than 10,000 lambs and sheep, and at least that many cattle. For just one outfit he recently looked at every one of their 7,000 steers that went past and got on the truck.
He had plenty of stories of people stepping across the line to illegal activity in the livestock business, doing a modern version of old-fashioned cattle rustling, though, he said, that doesnt happen as much anymore.
Immediately after conceding that, however, he remembered a case two years ago, and a recent situation in which every trailer was stopped between Star Valley and Jackson, and 100 stolen horses were recovered.
There are some dramatic discoveries made by brand inspectors and the law enforcement agents, but for the most part, Proffit said his job is to identify strays that may have been missed, and ensure they go back to the rightful owner.
